Neighbourhood Associations Grow-a-Row Competition!

Due to COVID-19 and the growing challenges around accessing fresh healthy food, KW Urban Harvester is running a Grow-a-Row program that encourages people to turn a portion of their yard or community garden plot, or even windowsill, to grow food for those in need. In response, our goal is to see if we can grow 5,000 shopping bags worth (or about 15 litres) of total produce together.!

We're so excited that your neighbourhood association is interested in growing food for the Grow-a-Row program and we know this will make a big difference in our community.

  • 1 in 20 households struggling with food security.

  • 37% of people who need food assistance are families with children

  • In the first 9 weeks of #COVID-19, Waterloo Region Food Bank helped to serve 43,540 individuals in need.

Getting involved is simple!

Step 1. Declare your intention to Grow-a-Row, or messy patch , (depending upon how you garden :) ), of food for donation. Also you can garden at either your home or in a community garden. If you are experiencing food insecurity and need to support your own needs, that is perfectly fine too!

Step 2. Request the seeds that you would like to receive!

Step 3. Plant the seeds and start growing!

Step 4 (Optional). You may keep all of your produce if you so choose. However, if you are donating some of your produce, keep track of the total weight of produce that you have grown and are donating using this form.

Step 5 (Optional). Deliver this produce either directly to people in need within your community, or to a participating Grow-a-Row food organization that will give out the food such as the Food Bank of Waterloo Region or the Community Fridge KW. If you will be delivering produce to an organization, try to contact them early so they know in advance what you will be giving.

Step 6 (Optional). Submit your form to growarowkw@gmail.com no later than November 1, 2021.

Let's see if we can make that goal! Feel free to check out our FAQs to learn more about the program.
