We would like to acknowledge that the land on which we grow, share, and garden together is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, and Chonnonton Peoples. We acknowledge the enduring presence and deep traditional knowledge, laws, and philosophies of the Indigenous Peoples with whom we share this land today.
KW Urban Harvester (KWUH) is a volunteer-run group turning underused urban land across Kitchener-Waterloo into food for our neighbours. Every plot, row, and shared yard comes back to the same simple belief: anyone can grow food, and no one should go without.

Our Story
Started in the spring of 2006 by Wilfrid Laurier University graduate Kyla Cotton, we are a group of committed individuals volunteering to turn our urban landscapes into a source of food and nutrition. We are glad to receive funding through Laurier Students' Public Interest Research Group (LSPIRG) as well as land generously donated by Wilfrid Laurier University.

How We're Organized
Today, KWUH is made up of community members and university volunteers, all with hands in the soil together. We operate as a Research and Action Group under LSPIRG, which is part of why you'll find Laurier students working alongside long-time Kitchener-Waterloo gardeners across our programs.

What We Do
What We Do
Our work takes a few different shapes, all rooted in growing, sharing, and learning together:
Grow-a-Row – Turning part of a home garden into extra rows of food for neighbours who need it.
Community Gardening – Tending shared garden plots together, including our site at Wilfrid Laurier University.
Yardsharing – Connecting gardeners with landowners who have space to share.
Urban foraging and fruit tree harvesting – Gathering food that's already growing around our city.
Seed, seedling, soil, and tool sharing – Including tool donations to the KW Library of Things.
Gardening education – FAQs, workshops, and resources on growing, preserving, and seed saving.
